LLO's Freshwater Discovery Day

We are excited to invite you to the first annual Freshwater Discovery Day on July 31st, 2024. At this day-long immersive event, the scientists of LLO will share our research with you and deepen your understanding of Earth’s largest lakes. From quantifying microplastics to spearheading the field of winter limnology, the science being conducted at LLO underpins a new era of water stewardship. Come join us on this journey.

The event will kick off with a morning interpretive cruise followed by an afternoon of demonstrations, presentations, and films. Lunch and dinner are included with purchase of a ticket.

Morning interpretive cruise - 9:15 AM check-in to Vista Fleet dock. Ticket holders will embark on a Lake Superior cruise from 10-11:40 AM with narrations and demonstrations from LLO scientists. Learn first-hand from those who are building knowledge about our Great Lakes. Light refreshments and beverages provided.

Lunch - At Pier B, includes grilled hamburgers*, BBQ baked beans, coleslaw, potato salad. *Impossible Burger substitute available. 

Afternoon at Pier B - From 2-5:30 PM, circulate among hands-on demonstrations, documentary screenings, touring Research Vessel Blue Heron, or listening to scientists talk about their work and why it is important. Or do all of these!

Dinner - Starting at 5:45 PM, enjoy a buffet dinner while socializing and hearing more about the present and future of large lakes research. Includes arugula salad, rosemary potatoes, sweet potato mash, green bean almondine, roasted veggies, grilled chicken.

At 7 PM, head outside for a regularly scheduled live music performance at Pier B.

Parking: Full-day free parking available at Pier B Resort Hotel. A 0.7 mile one-way walk to and from Vista Fleet dock is required for the morning cruise. Alternative arrangements are available for those that prefer a shuttle, contact [email protected] to request these services. Parking is also available near the Vista Fleet dock at the DECC for $10/day.
