Undergraduate Programs We Offer
We respond to the ever-increasing demands for the mathematical sciences in today's society by providing an integrated set of academic and research programs designed to prepare students for careers in business, industry, education, and government. The foundation for studies in the mathematical sciences is a solid high school education, preferably one with at least three and a half years of mathematics.
Double Major in Mathematics and Statistics and Actuarial Science (SAS)
Students may double major in Mathematics and SAS. To do so, a student must satisfy all requirements for both majors, with the additional requirement that STAT courses used for the STAT major (STAT 5511, 5531, 5571, 5572) cannot be used to fulfill the Mathematics elective requirements. Note that there is still substantial overlap between the two majors; the core courses for both majors are almost identical. Most students will need to take four additional 3-credit electives (at 4xxx or 5xxx level) to be able to change a Statistics major to a double major in Mathematics and Statistcs. These 12 elective credits, along with 3 credits for STAT 3612 (required for Statistics majors) combine to fulfill the 15 elective requirement for the Mathematics major. This is offered for students pursuing careers in teaching math within secondary schools in conjunction with UMD's College of Education and Human Service Professions. Before entering the upper division, a B.A.S. student must demonstrate proficiency in basic calculus and computer programming as part of 18 required lower division credits. Also required are 72 upper division credits in education, mathematics and statistics. Many B.A.S. students find it advantageous to also complete the course requirements for a second major or coaching certification. A minimum of 120 credits is required for the B.A.S. degree.

Student Learning Outcomes
Our department has established four broad program outcomes for our undergraduate math and statistics majors (B.S in Mathematics, B.S. in Statistics and Actuarial Science, B.A.S. in Teaching Mathematics) as part of the campus-wide assessment plan. These are:
1. Know the basic definitions, notations, and theorems of mathematics/statistics.
2. Be able to apply statistical and mathematical techniquies and models to solve problems.
4. Be able to write a coherent description of a mathematical or statistical presentation.
5. Be able to critically assess and explain mathematical/statistical arguments, both inside and outside of the classroom.
