Civil Engineering Department

Undergraduate student Sai Wu and grad student Alex Thelemann worked as part of a team gathering data on Duluth's iconic Blatnik Bridge.

Welcome!

The staff, faculty and students of the Civil Engineering Department are excited about what we have to offer and the potential impact you can have on the world by being part of our program.

For undergraduates, we offer a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering (B.S.C.E.).

Graduate students can pursue a Civil Engineering M.S. degree.

Our curriculum emphasizes resiliency and sustainability in four core tracks:

  • Environmental/Water Resources
  • Geotechnical
  • Structural
  • Project Management and Transportation systems

Learn more about these tracks on the Undergraduate Program page.

Focused on Research

In addition to classroom instruction, our faculty members are at the forefront of civil engineering research and teach students the hands-on skills needed to work in the field and the lab.

Undergraduates and graduate students participate in research and can make an immediate impact on our community. For example, senior design classes and the Duluth Shines program offer students the chance to partner with area businesses to collaborate and devise solutions for real-world problems.

Student Club Success

Our department has busy student clubs. They participate in local, regional and national conferences and competitions that strengthen their planning and teamwork skills while honing their ability to work with modern equipment in a research setting. For example, every year the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) group designs and builds a concrete canoe and takes it to competitions.  The group has earned the "Excellent University" award from the American Concrete Institute.

Connected to Our Community

We stay on top of industry trends and changes with the help of an Industrial Advisory Board and close connections with alumni and industry partners. Every year, we host a Civil Engineering Career Fair to help students find internships and jobs. Many of our student groups also take advantage of these connections by scheduling club visits with local professionals.

Our Mission
