LLO's Freshwater Discovery Day
Thank you to the sponsors of Freshwater Discovery Day 2025!
Congratulations to Science and Society Award winner Mindy Granley, and Alumni Award winner Isla Castañeda for their outstanding achievements and contributions to freshwater science.
After an incredible first year, we are thrilled to bring back Freshwater Discovery Day on July 30th, 2025. FDD is your chance to step into the world of Large Lakes Observatory researchers. Meet scientists, explore cutting-edge discoveries through hands-on demos and talks, and learn why lake research matters to our community at a critical time for freshwater science. Come join us on this journey.
At this day-long immersive event, the scientists of LLO will share our research with you and deepen your understanding of Earth’s largest lakes, with activities and demonstrations including:
- A scientist-guided Lake Superior cruise onboard the Vista Star
- What does UMD’s buoy data tell us?
- Tours of Research Vessel Blue Heron
- Cyanobacteria in the Duluth Harbor
- Winter limnology Ice shanty
- Trivia and exhibits about global lake research
- What makes Lake Superior water so good?
- Sediment coring demonstrations
- A film screening of Our Blue World
- Equipment demonstrations
and much more!
