Our Graduate Programs

Chemical Engineering M.S.Ch.E.

The Chemical Engineering Masters of Science (MS) program is intended for students and engineering practitioners in the private and public sector who are interested in advanced coursework and applied research. We offer a dynamic, hands-on program that ensures students are given the opportunity to conduct research using cutting-edge technology while working one-on-one with dedicated faculty.

Two options for completing this degree are offered - MS Plan A: Thesis Based and MS Plan B: Project Based.

Plan A involves writing and defending a thesis which requires in-depth research equivalent to 10 credits out of a total 30 credits. Plan B involves a capstone project equivalent to 3 credits (out of 30 total credits) and targets those students or practicing engineers who wish to have a hands-on learning experience solving technical problems preferably teaming up with an industrial counterpart.

M.S.Ch.E. Learning Goals and Outcomes

Iron Range Engineering Program

This program is designed for distance learning to help meet the needs of our region. Classes are offered on Minnesota's Iron Range at Mesabi Range College and are taught by UMD faculty.

Students like Hayden Tayler work full-time while earning their degree. It's tough, but he thinks it is well worth the effort and credits UMD faculty for making the process as smooth as possible. Read more about his journey through this program.

Integrated Undergraduate (MS IUG) Program

This is a unique opportunity for top students to seamlessly integrate their BS and MS degrees. Students typically apply to the program in their junior year and develop an integrated plan of study to complete a BSChE degree directly following by a thesis-based (Plan A) MS degree. Students admitted to the program are able to count up to 9 credits of their graduate coursework as technical electives at the undergraduate level. Students that are interested are encouraged to begin talking with their advisor, the Director of Graduate Studies and/or the Department Head about this opportunity early in their undergraduate program.

Students admitted to this program typically have a high GPA and are committed to completing a challenging thesis-based MS program.
