UMD Greenhouse/Botany Tours

The Department of Biology's greenhouses are the core support facilities for plants used in our instructional laboratories and research programs.  The year-round warmth and beauty of our greenhouse attracts many visitors from around campus and the Duluth community to learn about native and exotic plants, rearing techniques, and to obtain a respite from the northern Minnesota weather.

Greenhouse tours are free to the community and are offered Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 3 PM (last tour scheduled at 2 PM).  Greenhouse tours should be scheduled at least two weeks in advance.  Tour registration forms are available online.  The greenhouse can accommodate up to 20 individuals per tour group.

  • Learn about the diversity of plants and flowers
  • Learn about edible plants
  • Learn about medicinal properties of some plants
  • Learn the various parts of a plant and how plants work
  • Learn basic propagation techniques (i.e. taking cuttings, planting seeds, transplanting)

To schedule your UMD Greenhouse tour simply fill out our online registration form.  For more information about the UMD Greenhouse or to customize your tour, contact Greenhouse Manager, Matthew Jahnke (mjahnke@d.umn.edu) or call 218-726-7258.
