Dr. Kwon has been with the Department since the fall of 1988. He received his M.S. (1985) and Ph.D. (1988) degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Florida Institute of Technology, Melbourne, FL. He has been a leader in bringing research projects in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) to the Department as an interdisciplinary application of electrical and computer engineering, and has been instrumental in establishing the Northland Transportation Systems Research Laboratories (NATSRL), an advanced transportation research program at UMD.
He presently leads a transportation data center for live data service and large-scaled data archiving for state and federal transportation departments through the Transportation Data Research Laboratory. He is a member of the IEEE and served as an Associate Editor of the International Journal on Intelligent Automation and Soft Computing when the journal was active. Dr. Kwon's research interests include large-scaled transportation data archival/retrieval systems, portable weigh-in-motion (WIM) systems, wireless sensor networks, vehicle classification based on digital photos, photo-electric vehicle classifiers, and digital signal processing.
