The public is invited to tour UMD’s Large Lakes Observatory’s research vessel, the Blue Heron, on Friday, July 19. The ship will be docked in the Twin Ports Harbor near the Great Lakes Aquarium, 353 Harbor Drive. This Large Lakes Observatory (LLO) event, Science on Deck, is free and runs from noon–4 pm.
In addition to the tour, attendees will have the opportunity to meet a number UMD graduate students who are working on fresh water research. At 3 pm, fresh water researcher Katherine Schreiner will give a free talk entitled "Microplastics in Lake Superior: Their source and fate."
The Blue Heron is part of the University National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS), and is chartered by research scientists to explore any of the Great Lakes.
Located on the Duluth campus of the University of Minnesota Duluth, LLO is the only institute in the country dedicated to the study of large lakes throughout the world. LLO researchers focus on the global implications of investigations in the areas of aquatic chemistry, circular dynamics, geochemistry, acoustic remote sensing, plankton dynamics, sedimentology and paleoclimatology.
