Focus on Food

Everybody eats. Two events on Nov. 15 talk about food choices and their impacts. 

The Office of Sustainability is hosting two food-focused seminars this Thursday, Nov. 15t. 

Seminar 1

Jennifer Schmitt, program director and lead scientist for UMN Institute on the Environment’s NorthStar Initiative for Sustainable Enterprise, will be presenting her research titled, "Food Waste: A problem for social and environmental sustainability". The presentation will be in A.B. Anderson Hall room 245 from 4-5 pm. 

Inside and outside of IonE, Schmitt advances research and engagement about complex issues near and dear to her heart, just one of which is the food wasted throughout Minnesota, the United States, and the world. She has also been engaged in local food waste awareness events, including www.OpenFeasts.org. Jennifer has an M.S. in applied economics and Ph.D. in conservation biology from the University of Minnesota and a B.S. in biology and international relations from Beloit College.

 

Seminar 2

Shawna Weaver, PhD., Field Educator for the Ethical Choices Program, will present an educational seminar titled, "The Environment and Modern Agriculture". The presentation will be in LSBE 135 from 6-8 pm.  

Shawna will guide attendees through an exploration of how raising farmed animals and related crops affect ecosystems and our health through global warming, the depletion of natural resources, the pollution of soil, water and air, the use of pesticides, hormones and antibiotics, soil erosion, deforestation and world hunger. Participants discuss alternative choices that can help protect our environment.
