SCSE Highlights for February 2019

Highlighting Swenson College of Science & Engineering faculty & staff achievements from 2019 including the 2019 MinneWIC event.

FACULTY ACHIEVEMENTS

Dr. Jim Allert, Assistant Professor from the Department of Computer Science, received the 2018-2019 Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Dr. Mary Christiansen, Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering received the 2018-2019 Chancellor's Award for Outstanding Public Service. Mary also presented a national webinar for ACI (American Concrete Institute) on Alternative Cements on February 5.

Dr. Jing Bai, Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, attended the 2019 SPIE Photonics West Conference held in San Francisco, CA from February 2-7, as a presenter, a conference committee member and an invited session chair. She gave a talk entitled “Theoretical investigation on effects of group-velocity dispersion on mid-infrared quantum-cascade lasers with Fabry-Perot and ring cavities” and chaired the session “Optical Systems Simulation.”

Dr. Ben Dymond, Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering, was published in the MnDOT Report 2019-07 about anchorage of epoxy coated rebar and in the MnDOT Report 2019-09 about deterioration of mixed rebar and fiber-reinforced concrete bridge decks.

Dr. Dalibor Froncek, Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, presented a talk titled "Supermagic graphs with arbitrarily many different odd degrees" at Coast Combinatorics Conference at UH Manoa. This is a joint work with undergraduate student Jiangyi Qiu, and solves an open problem proposed in 2018 by former SCSE student Petr Kovar (MS 2004, currently Associate Professor at VSB-TU Ostrava, Czech Republic).

Dr. John Goodge, Professor in the Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences, was quoted in a news article published online by Nature magazine. The article is about a Chinese effort to drill through Antarctic ice into bedrock, a project somewhat similar to the RAID project.

Dr. Bethany Kubik, Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics & Statistics, is being published in the AKCE International Journal of Graphs and Combinatorics with co-authors S. Talbott, P. Harris, and R. Garcia. The title of the article is “Characterizing graphs of critical pairs of layered generalized crowns.”

TEAM EFFORTS

The GeoWall and GeoVideo teams in the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Club at UMD have qualified for a national competition. They will compete in Philadelphia at the 2020 GeoCongress from March 24-27. This is the GeoWall group’s third trip to nationals and the GeoVideo group’s first time qualifying. Benjamin McBroom is the captain of the GeoWall team and Chanelle Cruz is captain of the GeoVideo team.

The Department of Computer Science hosted the fifth MinneWIC meeting which brought together students, faculty, and computing professionals from across Minnesota and neighboring states to share experiences and strategies for recruiting and retaining women in computing fields and to explore issues common to women working in these fields. The conference took place February 16-17 and gave students the chance to share results from research projects they had worked on in an effort to build confidence and a network of support.
