Diversity makes our campus community stronger. When you give a gift to the UMD scholarships and funds listed below, you are supporting students or faculty from minority populations. 

Swenson College of Science and Engineering (SCSE):

Cristina Marie Sherer Guimaraes Memorial Scholarship - Biology - Fund 6537
Scholarship for undergraduate student with a declared major in any of the biological sciences with preference to a Native American or Alaskan Native.

Diversity Initiatives in Computer Science - Fund 22561
To support and encourage a diverse faculty and student population in computer science at UMD. Uses may include but are not limited to diversity-related departmental initiatives, conferences, scholarships and other student support and faculty support.

Dr. Alan M. Johns Pre-Medical Scholarship - Fund 1295
To provide scholarship assistance to SCSE students who are taking appropriate undergraduate classes towards pre-medicine and whose career goal is to become a medical doctor. A preference will be given to Native American students.

Elliott Scholarship for the Sciences - Fund 20292
To provide financial assistance to full-time, undergraduate or graduate students, attending UMD, enrolled in SCSE, who demonstrate financial need (and when multiple recipients are considered equally qualified, financial need shall be the determining factor), who are lawfully in the United States on a temporary student visa, who have a strong interest in and connection with developing countries in which women are at a disadvantage, preference will be given for students who will contribute to student body diversity. In evaluating student body diversity, a plus factor will be given to female students if they are underrepresented in the University or in the applicable major or program at the time of the award, the award may be renewable for one year (renewed one time), provided the recipient demonstrates satisfactory progress toward a degree.

Mary Ann and Jerry Ostroski Engineering Scholarship Fund - Fund 6560
Scholarship(s) to non-traditional engineering students at UMD

Ronnie Lindstrom International Student Scholarship - Chemistry and Biochemistry - Fund 5763
To provide one scholarship that will cover the entire cost of tuition, fees, books, and room and board (on campus) for a student who meets the following criteria: Entering UMD freshman, declared major in chemistry or biochemistry major, admissible to UMD, according to the donors wishes a plus factor will be given to students from Cuba, Vietnam, Azerbaijan, and Morocco.

WISE Faculty Development Fund - Fund 22783
To support and encourage a diverse faculty in SCSE at UMD through faculty support. Uses may include but are not limited to diversity-related initiatives, conferences, professional development and training.

Athletics:

HOPE Scholarship - Football - Fund 7798
To be eligible for the "HOPE" Scholarship, the student athlete: 1) will be full-time in good academic standing, 2) will be on the UMD Bulldog football team, 3) will be able to demonstrate need, 4) will be sophomore, junior, or senior, 5) recipient will read the "statement of purpose." Plus factor is given to minority students who are in good academic standing and can demonstrate need.

College of Education and Human Service Professions (CEHSP):

American Indian/Alaskan Native Community Volunteer Scholarship - Fund 5577 
To assist American Indian/Alaskan Native community volunteers in their academic endeavors. In accordance with the donors' wishes students must be a UMD student with a demonstrated commitment to volunteering with the American Indian/Alaskan Native Community. Student must be in good academic standing. Financial need preferred but not required. Scholarship may be given to a first, second, third or fourth year student. Scholarship is renewable and transfer students are eligible.

Education Faculty Diversity Scholarship -  Fund 6247
CEHSP will use the scholarship to promote increased enrollment of education majors and a diverse student body. A plus factor will be given to students of color, if underrepresented at the time of the award.

Mary M. Mullen Memorial Scholarship -  Fund 22394
The purpose of the Fund is to provide financial support to students at the University. Students are eligible to be considered for this award if they are: a) attending the University of Minnesota Duluth; b) enrolled full-time; c) undergraduate degree seeking students; d) enrolled in CEHSP; e) studying towards a degree in the areas of physical education or environmental and outdoor education; f) able to demonstrate financial need. When possible, preference will be given to students who will enhance the diversity of the student body as described by the University. In evaluating student body diversity, after the eligible pool of candidates are selected, an additional consideration (plus factor) will be given for female students if they are underrepresented at the University or in the applicable major or program at the time of the award. The Donors' wish is for award decisions to made in a manner that maximizes the impact to each recipient rather than making many small awards.

Picture Your Passion Scholarship -  Applied Human Sciences - Fund 7513
Purpose of this fund is to promote diversity among UMD students by assisting non-traditional students returning to school and health education. Students desiring internships abroad.

College of Liberal Arts (CLA):

Frank McCray Jr. Achievement Scholarship - Fund 8574
To provide payments to full-time undergraduate students in CLA according to the following guidelines: Students must have accumulated enough credits to be considered a sophomore, a plus factor will be given to students of color, students must have demonstrated financial need and high academic achievement, student must submit letters of recommendation from a non-family member from the Duluth community and a faculty member whose course the student has completed, student must submit a current transcript with a GPA of 3.3 or higher, student must submit a 3-10 page essay addressing the following topics: why they student deserves the scholarship; how the student will honor the scholarship; what the scholarship means to the student; provide notable examples of personal qualities.

Financial Aid:

Greene Family Scholarship - Fund 22811
To provide financial support to students. Students are eligible to be considered for this award if they are: a)attending UMD; b)enrolled full-time (except for in year of graduation completion); c)undergraduate degree seeking students; d)studying towards any degree offered on campus; e)in good academic standing; f)who graduated from a high school in Minnesota. g)Preference will be given to students who are able to demonstrate financial need. When possible, preference will be given to students who will enhance the diversity of the student body as described by the University. In evaluating student body diversity, after the eligible pool of candidates are selected, an additional consideration (plus factor) will be given for Black/African American or American Indian/Native American students if they are underrepresented at the University or in the applicable major or program at the time of the award. This award may be renewable to the recipient, provided the recipient demonstrates satisfactory progress toward a degree and continues to meet the criteria of the award. The Donors' wish is for this award to be used as a recruitment tool to attract and retain the most eligible candidates and follow those students through to completion of their undergraduate degree. The Donors also wish to state their preference for award amounts to have a meaningful impact to each recipient and they believe that this is best done by aiming for award amounts to be approximately fifty percent (50%) to seventy-five percent (75%) of the cost of tuition.

Petra Orloff and John Reed Scholarship - Fund 7696
To promote diverse student body; in accordance w/ donor wishes, a plus factor will be given to Native American Indian students at UMD; students with need.

Labovitz School of Business and Economics (LBSE):

Abha Raj Memorial Scholarship -  Fund 23374 
Students are eligible to be considered for this award if they are: a) attending the University of Minnesota Duluth; b) enrolled full-time; c) undergraduate degree seeking students; d) enrolled in LSBE; e) able to demonstrate financial need. f) Preference will be given to students who face obstacles to achieving their educational goals and need additional financial support. g) When possible, additional preference will be given to students who will enhance the diversity of the student body as described by the University. In evaluating student body diversity, after the eligible pool of candidates are selected, an additional consideration (plus factor) will be given for students if they are underrepresented at the University or in the applicable major or program at the time of the award.

LSBE Susana Pelayo Woodward Scholarship - Accounting and Finance - Fund 5389
To provide scholarship funds for full-time junior or senior LSBE students in accounting/finance/MIS with a GPA of 2.5 or higher. Applicants must be in good academic standing and preference given to Hispanic/Latino/Chicano students with demonstrated financial need.

Multicultural Center:

Belote Family Scholarship - Fund 4084
This scholarship supports women students of color who show financial need and who have a minimum GPA of 2.5.

Clayton-Jackson-McGhie African-American Scholarship - Fund 2994
Will be used for scholarships to incoming African-American freshmen with financial need & academic achievement who are actively involved in school, church or community service.

Cruden-Riggs Scholarship - Fund 6021
Scholarship for students who actively contribute to the people and issues of the LGBT Community at large and have a financial need.

Cultural Diversity Scholarship - Fund 21385
Scholarships to promote a diverse student body.

Harry Oden Scholarship - Fund 3579
To provide scholarship funds to minority students to allow their studies to continue at UMD. GPA must be at least 2.5.

Hli Vaj Scholarship - Fund 9008
To provide scholarships support to students who actively contribute support to Asian Pacific American people and issues. Preference will be given to students who are active participants in the Asian community at large and have a financial need.

Magnuson Minority Scholarship - Fund 8588
To provide scholarships through the Multicultural Office at UMD to any minority student. Selection will be made by the director of the Multicultural Center.

Rutherford International Student Scholarship - Fund 3955
This scholarship supports full-time undergraduate international students in any major, who demonstrate financial need and who are in good academic standing.

William Maupins Memorial Scholarship - Fund 3556
To be used for scholarships for minority students. Selection criteria to be determined by the African American Advisory Board.

Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI):

Office of Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives Fund - Fund 20612
Many of the students the ODI works with have had their summer plans and employment disrupted by recent events in Minneapolis, and due to the challenges related to the COVID-19 outbreak. Many students have significant financial need to cover basic essentials like food and rent. Donations will directly support a UMD student who needs help this summer.
