Concrete Win in Big Beam contest

SCSE Civil Engineering students place in national PCI Big Beam Contest.

The above video shows the UMD beam as it is being tested. At about the 4:50 mark, the pressure takes its toll.

The Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) sponsors a nationwide competition where students fabricate and test a precast concrete beam with the help of local precast concrete PCI producer members. Prizes are awarded to the top twenty performers in consideration of efficient design, highest load capacity, and other categories.

The UMD team earned 52.75 points and took sixth place, coming home with a $1000 award.

The students involved were: Connor Mills, Ethan Herberg, and Lucas Kaari.
