Department of Biology Scholarships & Awards
We are proud of the accomplishments of our students and try our best to recognize their achievements by offering several annual awards and scholarships.
Awards are chosen through faculty nominations and do not require an application.
Currently enrolled Biology B.A., Biology B.S. and Cell and Molecular Biology majors, who are in good academic standing, are eligible to apply for the departmental scholarships.

Swenson College Scholarships and Awards
Many scholarships and awards are offered through our college, too.
These include the Solidarity Through Science Scholarship, Dr. Alan M. Johns Pre-Medical Scholarship, the Swenson Family Foundation Scholarships (see below) and Milton H. Sax Scholarship.

Swenson Family Foundation Scholarships
James R. (Jim) Swenson graduated from UMD in 1959, with a BA in Chemistry. Swenson went on to found Details, Inc., a prolific, high technology, printed circuit shop, which he sold a few years ago. He now wishes to give back to future science students at his alma mater, a place where he says he received much individual attention, outstanding career counseling, and "a real feel for industry and research."
Requirements: Outstanding entering freshman; chemistry or biochemistry major; financial need; U.S. citizen; eligible for MN in-state tuition. Students apply during the spring of their senior year of high school. Applicants submit an application form, transcript, ACT scores and letters of recommendation. Award winners receive Certificate; Scholarship for the following academic year, renewable for up to four years.
