Polish Faculty Receive Award for UMD Cooperative Microbiology Course Offered in Poland

The Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education presented an award to eleven Polish faculty of the University of Wroclaw, Wroclaw, Poland for their participation in a University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) General Microbiology course offered in Poland. The award ceremony was held on November 26 in the Royal Castle in Warsaw, Poland.

In 2006 Professor and former Science and Engineering Dean James P. Riehl and Conrad E. Firling of the UMD Swenson College of Science and Engineering established a summer Study Abroad Program at the historic University of Wroclaw in southwestern Poland. The program offers undergraduate science students a laboratory-intensive microbiology course at the University of Wroclaw’s Institute of Genetics and Microbiology.

Since 2006, over one hundred UMD students have participated in the course as part of the Study Abroad Program, which includes an introduction to the culture, language, geography, and history of central Europe.
