UMD has a variety of 3D printers on hand for student and faculty use and is inviting the general public to see them in action and learn more about this technology.
On Thursday, March 3 from 9 to 11 am, UMD’s Viz Lab and Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Departments are hosting an open house. The event will be held in the UMD 's Viz Lab, Marshall Performing Arts Center Room 154, 1215 Ordean Court. In addition to checking out the 3D printers, visitors will be able to see other fabrication tools like UMD’s water cutter and forge.
A UMD senior majoring in Mechanical & Industrial Engineering Alex Stecker will show off a 3D printer he assembled himself. Lisa Fitzpatrick, director of the Viz Lab, is co-hosting the open house to generate awareness of the resources on campus and to encourage creative and interdisciplinary work. “We need to stay at the forefront of emerging technologies for our students so it’s important we make people aware of the resources we have available,” said Fitzpatrick. “Plus, many people have heard of this technology but have never had a chance to see it in person or learn how the machines work.”
The Mechanical & Industrial Engineering Department is part of UMD's Swenson College of Science & Engineering (SCSE) which has about 3,100 undergraduates and 220 graduate students. SCSE is home to ten academic departments, in addition to the Large Lakes Observatory, the UMD Air Force ROTC program, and the Iron Range Engineering program, and connects students with hands-on research opportunities through its collaboration with multiple research institutions and area businesses.
