Students in UMD's Chemistry and Biochemistry Club are excited about chemistry and want others to share their enthusiasm. To help encourage a sense of wonder with science, the students are hosting their annual Chemistry Magic Show on Friday, April 15 in the UMD Chemistry Building from 6-8 p.m.
The event is free and intended for people of all ages with a focus on inspiring young people to pursue education and careers in science. Jasmin Mellesmoen is the UMD Chemistry and Biochemistry Club President and a lead organizer of the event. “It’s a lot of fun and we look forward to it all year,” said Mellesmoen. “We call it the Chemistry Magic show because we do demonstrations that are really cool to watch and will amaze our audience.”
Schools have received fliers about the event to encourage youth to come and many local teachers offer extra credit to students that attend the event. The Chemistry and Biochemistry Club’s advisor is Professor Romesh Lakhan and he has been overseeing the effort since he came to UMD. “This is a great option for families wanting to do something different on a Friday night,” said Lakhan. “In past years, the people coming to the show have loved it.”
The Chemistry and Biochemistry Club is one of more than 40 student organizations with a science or engineering focus within UMD’s Swenson College of Science & Engineering (SCSE). The College has approximately 3,100 undergraduates and 220 graduate students and is home to ten academic departments, in addition to the Large Lakes Observatory, the UMD Air Force ROTC program, and the Iron Range Engineering program. SCSE connects students with hands-on research opportunities through its collaboration with multiple research institutions and area businesses.
