Mapping China's Fujian Province

Mapping the Experiences of Chinese Immigrants

Michele Statz, Postdoctoral Researcher in the Department of Biobehavioral Health and Population Sciences, has a book forthcoming with Vanderbilt University Press. Tentatively titled An Impossible Cause: Lawyering at the Interstices of Chinese Youth Mobility, Statz's book examines how legal advocacy in the U.S. often critically overlooks the nuanced and agentive realities that young Fujianese clients manage. Dr. Statz collaborated with the Geospatial Analysis Center to create maps for her book illustrating China's Fujian Province. Largely isolated from the rest of China and from one another via the Min River and nearby mountain ranges, the distinct regional groups within Fujian Province boast the most heterogeneous dialects of any Chinese province.
