What documents will I need to apply for a faculty position?

You will upload only three separate documents, each as a PDF. Please adhere to the word and page limits.

  1. Research statement — The research statement should be understandable to a non-specialist. Recommended maximum: 2,000 words/5 pages. This statement is decoupled from the mission alignment statement and evaluated using the department's screening rubric (see the Civil and Environmental Engineering screening rubrics).
  2. Mission alignment statement — Maximum: 1,000 words/2 pages. Please respond to the following prompt:
UMD is a student-centered research university within the University of Minnesota System. Our mission is to inspire diverse ways of learning, creating, and being by nurturing relationships that connect people, ideas, and places. Share examples of how your teaching and service experiences align with and contribute to our mission.

  3. Curriculum vitae (CV)

What is the process for evaluating applications?

  • When you submit your application, your research statement and mission alignment statement will be separated from the rest of your application and reviewed independently. To help reduce potential bias, some identifying information—such as names, institutions, principal investigators, journals, and other information that may reveal an applicant’s identity or professional background—will be redacted to the extent possible.

  • Each statement will be evaluated independently by the search committee using well-defined, department-specific screening rubrics.

  • The highest-ranked applicants will be identified as the pool from which semi-finalists will be selected for initial phone or Zoom interviews. At this stage, the two statements will be reconnected with the rest of the application materials, including the CV and reference list, and candidate names will be shared with the search committee.

  • The search committee will then interview semi-finalists by Zoom or phone. Questions and rubrics for the initial interview will likely be shared with candidates before the interviews.

  • Finalists will be invited for on-campus interviews to meet with faculty, staff, and students in the Department and across Swenson College. References for potential finalists will be contacted before the on-campus interviews.
