Wxmen in Computing

About This Group

WIC is a recently revived organization on campus dedicated to creating community through code. We are open to all women and non-binary students (because the only binary we need is on our computers!). WIC is focused on creating a community where everyone feels welcome and safe, We strive to empower gender minorities within the computer science major.

UMD needs WIC because in 2021, only 21.9% of CS Degrees were given to women, and women make up only 26% of the computer science workforce. Knowing these statistics, it makes it even more prominent why we need a club to empower gender minorities in a male-dominated field.

WIC Activities

We are currently focused on social and bonding activities in order to form a community within the CS major. Our social events include:

  • Movie nights
  • Arts and crafts
  • Trivia nights
  • Hikes and outdoor adventures
  • Group study sessions and code-alongs

As our club develops, we would like to steer it in more professional directions, setting up our members for success in whatever field of tech they choose. We plan to have events like:

  • Talks with UMD Computer Science faculty
  • Internship and career opportunities
  • Collaborating with other STEM-focused groups at UMD
  • LinkedIn workshops
  • Resume workshops
  • And more!
