About the Artist: Ellen B. Sandbeck is a Duluth based artist whose work centers on the intricate art of papercutting, a highly detailed, multi-layered process that transforms paper into complex visual narratives. Ellen has long been drawn to the natural world, with much of her work focusing on non-human subjects, ecology, and environmental systems. Her papercuts are research-based and carefully planned, using detailed imagery to draw viewers in and spark reflection on the science and environmental stories behind the work.
LLO Art Gallery
The Large Lakes Observatory Art Gallery brings art and science together to deepen our engagement with freshwater research through the shared practice of observation. The gallery’s mission is to foster curiosity, reflection, and dialogue by showcasing works that explore the beauty, complexity, and cultural significance of lakes and rivers around the world. By creating a space where scientific inquiry and creative expression intersect, the gallery highlights observation as a foundational tool for both artists and scientists, inviting diverse audiences to slow down, look closely, and connect more deeply with the waters that shape our environment and communities.

About the Artist in Residence Program
The Large Lakes Observatory (LLO) understands that art is integral to explaining and sharing science, and have sought to promote this partnerships with our Artist in Residence program. The program will highlight a local artist through a collaboration with our scientists to develop unique pieces inspired by the research pursued at LLO. The art will be showcased in the Research Laboratory Building, and we invite you to join us at the public gallery opening.
