The Department of Biology Specimen Collection currently houses approximately 50,000 cataloged specimens. Of these, the vast majority are pinned insects, dried study skins, and skulls.
Our collection also houses fully articulated skeletons, eggs, nests, frass, and scat collections. Geographically, most of our collection comes from the upper Midwest. These collections are the record of the natural diversity and therefore natural heritage of our region.
For students to study
The collection facility houses specimens that serve as the foundation for our undergraduate students' scientific study of fauna.
Each year the collection facility supports ten courses offered to about 1,300 students, many undergraduate research projects, and departmentally supported independent studies.
