What is Twin Ports Teen Science Cafe?

Twin Ports high school students are invited to monthly meetings at the UMD campus. Presentation topics have been chosen by high school Teen Leaders who are working with UMD experts to ensure the content is relevant and engaging. It is not a lecture! Researchers will share a topic and provide the background for activities and discussion. View highlights of past cafes.

As the world faces increased challenges

We need new innovative STEM leaders to meet them. Our collective hope is that increased understanding of STEM will support informed decision making from all citizens.

Cafe events are set for Friday evenings from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Our next cafe be held on April 26 to explore renewable energy.

May 10- Aerospace Engineering with Nick Crist at Cirrus Aircraft

Past Cafe Topics

Cafe participants have explored gamification to encourage safe driving for young drivers (Industrial Engineering), the relevance of cyber security by using cryptography to make and break codes (Mathematics and Statistics), have launched rockets (interdisciplinary Science and Engineering), and explored microscopic life from Lake Superior (Aquatic Ecology).

How do Cafes Happen?

Teen Leaders talk with scientists and engineers, advertise, and organize the cafes. The work is supported by an SCSE committee with funding from Cirrus Aircraft. This program has been designed in collaboration with students from Denfeld, Duluth East, Harbor City Hermantown, and Marshall high schools.
