If you have an internship or co-op offer that you’ve accepted, congratulations! You’ll now need to enroll in an internship course to have the experience listed on your UMD transcript.
There are a few options to have an experience listed on your transcript that vary by department. The general options are listed below, and you can find information specific to your department in the following section, including the link to the enrollment form.
To submit the enrollment form, you'll need to provide student information (Name, email, ID number, major) & internship site information (organization, title, start & end dates, hours per week, supervisor information, and expected job duties). Some for-credit courses may require you provide additional information which you can find specific to your department below.
NOTE: If the enrollment form is not completely filled out or submitted, your application to enroll in the internship courses will not be considered for department approval.

Biology
Option #1: BIOL 98: Zero-credit Internship
Why would you select this option? You'll get your internship on your transcript (zero-credits), and will receive support during your internship. Most Biology students completing an internship will enroll in this course.
No tuition charged; UMD transcript will indicate completion of an internship; requires department approval.
The zero-credit internship requires you to complete the enrollment form, register for the course, and complete an exit survey at the end of the semester to receive transcript recognition of internship completion.
Option #2: BIOL 3996: One-credit Internship
Why would you select this option? You'll get your internship on your transcript, receive maximum of one course credit that can be applied to your major, and receive support during your internship. You may also have assignments to complete.
One-credit internship; students are charged tuition for the course, paid or unpaid work with external employer involves research or learning in biology comparable to that in an upper-level Biology course; student will have a Biology Department faculty sponsor and will produce a detailed written report or other product the faculty sponsor must approve for satisfactory completion; UMD transcript will indicate completion for credit; requires department approval.

Why would you select this option? You'll get your internship on your transcript (zero-credits), and will receive support during your internship. Also good for dual ME & IE majors.
No tuition charged; UMD transcript recognition of INTERNSHIP completion; requires department approval. The zero-credit internship requires you to complete the enrollment form, register for the course, and complete an exit survey at the end of the semester to receive transcript recognition of internship completion.

Option #2: ME 4197 & IE 4197: One-credit Internship
Why would you select this option? You'll get your internship on your transcript and receive course credit towards a tech elective.
Students are charged tuition for the course & requires department approval. Biweekly status reports and final written report must be submitted to department. Requires more than 15 hours per week of company work. A-F or Aud.
Option #3: ME 4297 & IE 4297: Two-credit Internship
Why would you select this option? You've already taken IE 4196 or 4197 or ME 4196 or 4197, and want to get your internship on your transcript and receive course credit towards a tech elective.
Prereq-IE 4196 or 4197 or ME 4196 or 4197. Students are charged tuition for the course & requires department approval. Biweekly status reports and final written report must be submitted to department. Requires more than 15 hours per week of company work. A-F or Aud.
Option #4: ME 4196 & IE 4196: One-credit Cooperative Education (Co-op)
Why would you select this option? You'll get your co-op on your transcript and receive course credit, and maintain full-time student status.
Students are charged tuition for the course & requires department approval. Biweekly status reports and final written report must be submitted to department. A-F or Aud.
Option #5: ME 4296 & IE 4296: Two-credit Cooperative Education (Co-op)
Why would you select this option? You've already taken IE 4196 or ME 4196 and you want your co-op on your transcript, to receive course credit, and to maintain full-time student status.
Prereq-IE 4196 or ME 4196; Students are charged tuition for the course & requires department approval. Biweekly status reports and final written report must be submitted to department. A-F or Aud.
Note: All for-credit courses (options #2-5) consist of advanced practical work experience with employer closely associated with student’s academic area; arranged by mutual agreement among student, department, and employer.

Can I enroll in these courses before I receive an internship offer?
No, you can only enroll in the internship or co-op courses once you have received an offer from an organization.

Can I enroll in an internship course to get transcript recognition or academic credit after I’ve completed the internship?
No, you must be concurrently taking an internship course and interning to have the internship listed on your transcript or receive academic credit.

How long does it take for my department to approve my internship after submitting the enrollment form?
The processing time for departmental approval for the internship courses can vary by department. Typically, expect there to be about a 2-week processing time, so it is encouraged you fill out the enrollment form as soon as you receive an internship offer.

When is the deadline to enroll in the internship or co-op courses?
Ideally, you should complete the enrollment form for your department after accepting an internship or co-op offer, and before the semester in which you will be completing the internship. Please allow for about a 2-week processing time from filling out the enrollment form and allowing time for your department's approver to approve the internship.
For those who may be receiving an internship offer close to the start of an academic semester but that want to enroll in an internship course, please refer to the add/drop dates for the semester in which you are enrolling in. Once the add/drop date has passed or you have completed your internship experience, there will not be an opportunity to enroll in an internship course.

I submitted the form for the zero-credit course but I want to switch to a course for one or more credits. Can I switch?
Please refer to the add/drop dates for the semester in which you are enrolling in. Once the add/drop date has passed or you have completed your internship experience, there will not be an opportunity to change the course you are enrolled in.
Please contact your department head prior to the add/drop date for the semester if you need to switch courses.
Remember that the internship courses require departmental approval, so you need to submit a request for a change with significant advance notice to allow time for departmental approval.

Can international students use a department’s 0098 Internship Course to fulfill CPT requirements?
At this time no, your department’s 0098 internship course does not fulfill CPT requirements for International Students. You must enroll in at least one credit to fulfill CPT requirements. Please reach out to Anna Gilmore ([email protected]) with questions about CPT requirements.
