A gift to support scholarships is a gift of education, opportunity and an investment in the future. Thanks to the generosity of alumni, faculty and friends the scholarships listed below are available to students in our department. To Apply For Scholarships
Each spring, the Department of Mathematics and Statistics awards scholarships for the following academic year to majors who have demonstrated superior performance in their upper-level mathematics and statistics courses. Applications are now being accepted for the 2023-24 academic year. The deadline to apply is March 15, 2024.
Priority is given to students who have done well in a large number of courses at the 3000 level or above. Consideration is also given to participation in departmental activities, such as Actuary Club, Math Club, Putnam Exam and Mathematical Contest in Modeling. Tutoring and grading are also given consideration.
Most awards are given to seniors, but some high achieving juniors also receive awards. The size of the awards typically ranges from $500 to $3,000 per year.

Undergraduate Scholarships
James L. Nelson Memorial Scholarship Scholarship
This award honors James L. Nelson who, as a faculty member, was influential in the development of the department. The recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student pursing a degree in mathematics or math education and in their junior or senior year of study and able to maintain a GPA of 3.0 in all coursework.
UMD Lounsberry Scholarship
The recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student pursing a degree in mathematics or math education, able to demonstrate financial need, have completed at least one year of study, able to maintain a GPA of 3.0 in all coursework. Preference will be to students (in this order) from Duluth, MN or Superior, WI.
Robert L. Senkler Scholarship
The recipient of this scholarship must be a full-time undergraduate student with a declared major in the UMD Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Preference is given to students studying towards a career in actuarial science. Recipients are selected based on academic merit.
Faculty Excellence Scholarships
Recipients of these scholarships are selected by the Mathematics and Statistics Scholarship committee. These scholarships are awarded from funds donated by retired department faculty.
Grace Peterson Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established by the family of longtime faculty member Grace Peterson. She was a pioneer and role model for women in mathematics at a time when very few women held positions in mathematics. The recipient of this scholarship must be a full-time undergraduate student with a declared major in the UMD Department of Mathematics and Statistics and able to maintain a GPA of 3.0 or greater.
Dr. Sylvan D. Burgstahler Memorial Scholarship
Established in 2007 in honor of longtime faculty member Dr. Sylvan D. Burgstahler. The recipient of this scholarship must be a full-time undergraduate student entering their sophomore year or greater, with a declared major in the UMD Department of Mathematics and Statistics and able to maintain a GPA of 3.0 or greater.
The William and Rhonda Krossner Scholarship in memory of Professor Mark Kac
The recipient of this scholarship must be a full-time undergraduate student with a declared major in the UMD Department of Mathematics and Statistics and entering their senior year.
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Scholarship in honor of William Lokke
Recipients of this scholarship must be a full-time undergraduate student with a declared major in the UMD Department of Mathematics and Statistics and able to maintain an overall GPA of 3.0 or greater. Preference for students who may not have a perfect record but have an innovative approaches to scientific problem solving.
Barry R. and Kang Ling James Scholarship for Mathematics and Statistics
Recipients must be full-time undergraduate students at UMD who have demonstrated meritorious accomplishments in their studies, with a GPA of at least 3.50, entering their Junior or Senior year of studies and pursuing a degree in Statistics and Actuarial Science.

Duane E. Anderson Graduate Fellowship
This fellowship was established in 2000 in the memory of Duane E. Anderson, a long-time department head and faculty member in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics who was influential in the establishment of the Masters Degree in Applied and Computational Mathematics. The award is intended to recruit and retain graduate students in that program.
To be considered, a student must be admitted in the UMD Program in Applied and Computational Mathematics and have demonstrated academic merit (a minimum average of 3.0 over all graduate courses of study). The primary intentions of the award are to:
(1) Assist students in financial need
(2) Recruit women and minority students to the study of mathematics and its applications
Summer Research Fellowship
Each year, we attempt to identify sources of financial aid to help support graduate student studies over the summer months. When funds are available, they have been allocated to promote productive summer activity by those students who have made sufficient progress towards the completion of their degree.
In the past, available funds have been offered on a competitive basis. While all students are encouraged to apply, the highest priority is given to those who have identified thesis/project topics and who hope to work on these over the summer. These awards have no associated teaching responsibilities. They are announced typically near the end of the Spring semester, and distributed during the summer.
Students wishing to apply for a summer fellowship must submit a Proposal to the Director of Graduate Studies by April 20. For more details, see instructions.
This support is not intended to be a reward for past service, but rather is given in anticipation of substantial effort on a project or thesis. Recipients are expected to maintain contact with their advisor over the summer and keep them appraised of progress. The department's summer support is not intended as a means of raising a student's summer salary over the 100% GRA level for those who have found additional funding from other university sources. Therefore, we retain the right to reduce summer fellowship support of a graduate student in order to maintain a total university level of support of not more than 100% time.
After completing a summer research project, students are required to submit a brief Final Report approved by the associated faculty member to the Director of Graduate Studies by September 1.
Diversity of Views and Experiences (DOVE) Recruiting Fellowship
Only U.S. citizens and permanent residents are eligible for nomination. Applications are due by December 1.
Travel Support for Graduate Student Travel and Projects
Some funds are available to partially support travel by UMD graduate students for dissemination of their scholarly or artistic contributions associated with their graduate studies at UMD. An example might be presentation of research from a thesis at a meeting or conference. It is expected the student will attempt to garner other support of their travel through their advisor, program, department and college.
