Members of the Clean Snowmobile Challenge team at UMD are gathering Wed., March 16 at 2:30 pm in UMD’s Civil Engineering Building high bay lab to show off their snowmobile and share the results of a recent week-long competition that included a 100 mile endurance race.
The 17th annual Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Clean Snowmobile Challenge took place March 7–12 and was hosted by Michigan Technological University in Houghton, MI. The team is waiting on some final results, but already won the Best Engine Design award.
More than 20 college teams from around the world competed in many categories including technical presentations, emissions and noise measurements and overall ride. This is UMD’s third year in the contest and 11 students from the Mechanical & Industrial and Electrical Engineering Departments within UMD’s Swenson College of Science & Engineering have worked on the project along with students from the UMD Marketing Department
The team members started with a new sled donated by Arctic Cat and through a lot of design work and analysis, have transformed it into a sled that is cleaner, quieter and more efficient.
SCSE has approximately 3,100 undergraduates and 220 graduate students. The College is home to ten academic departments, in addition to the Large Lakes Observatory, the UMD Air Force ROTC program, and the Iron Range Engineering program, and connects students with hands-on research opportunities through its collaboration with multiple research institutions and area businesses.
