Great Lakes Aquarium

Hands-on Science

The Aquarium's model Blue Heron features a variety of hands-on displays putting real science at the visitors' fingertips.

The “Unsalted Seas" exhibit at the Great Lakes Aquarium in Duluth opened to the public in July of 2016. The permanent exhibit covers 3500 square feet and showcases large lakes of the world, the animals that call them home and their importance as global freshwater resources.

In order to explore and study large lakes, scientists have adopted and adapted methods used to study the world's oceans. The vast expanses of water, incredible depths, strong wave action, and weather patterns of large lakes require specialized navigation techniques, research vessels and sampling equipment.
