Cybergames Youth League (UMDCYL)
The UMDCYL is a robotics and computer programming competition offered by our Computer Science Department for middle school students. Teams participate by designing and programming web-based virtual robotic machines in a virtual arena. The entire program is online and therefore only requires a web browser.
Registration takes place each spring and teams compete in a total of six competitions. In the six league competitions, each of the schools' machines will be pitted against those of other participants and faced with the challenge to track and outsmart the machines of the other teams.
The Cybergames are exciting, challenging, fun and intellectually stimulating. They teach programming basics and, through competition, encourage students to create sophisticated designs with limited resources.
The school with the best match record of the season is declared the winner.
After the season's completion, UMD will host the UMDCYL Invitational on campus where students receive awards, meet students from other schools, play matches in person, enjoy free food, win prizes, and listen to speakers. Get started with Cybergames by visiting our online information tutorials.

Large Lakes Observatory Presents Science on Deck
The Large Lakes Observatory (LLO) is the only institute in the country dedicated to the study of large lakes throughout the world. LLO also operates the largest university-owned research vessel in the Great Lakes, the research vessel Blue Heron. Built in 1985 as a fishing boat, the Blue Heron was purchased by the University of Minnesota in 1997 and converted into a limnological research vessel. She is outfitted with state-of-the-art research equipment.
The scientists and staff of UMD's Large Lakes Observatory (LLO) invite the public and students of all ages to board and tour the research vessel Blue Heron to learn about science on the Great Lake of Superior. During Science on Deck, the ship is docked at the landing behind the Great Lakes Aquarium on Harbor Drive. LLO Science On Deck will feature presentations from regional experts on scientific topics and hands-on science activities. Tours and activities are typically scheduled from 12-4 PM. However, the 2017 season is now over and 2018 dates have not yet been announced.
