University–Industry Relationship

As the land-grant institution in the State of Minnesota, the University of Minnesota's fate is closely intertwined with the economic health and welfare of the state of Minnesota.

UMD has a long history of working with regional industries as evidenced by the success of the Natural Resource Research Institute (NRRI) and the Center for Economic Development (CED).

The Swenson College of Science and Engineering (SCSE) has become the school of choice for many students from northeast Minnesota. Right now more than 1,200 of these students are seeking an engineering or science degree.

Over the years, the connections between SCSE and regional industry have increased substantially. Many interactions between industry and SCSE are in the general areas of material science and materials engineering.

We believe that advances in the design, manufacture, and use of new materials are major emerging research areas of market importance to regional industry. Fortunately, it's an area where UMD demonstrates considerable strength among its current faculty.

Industrial/Academic Partnership Model

This model has been adopted across the country and has proven to be an economical and beneficial way to bring together scientific and industrial resources for regional development.

These partnerships facilitate:

  • Improvement of processes
  • Development of new materials
  • Products that survive the test of commercialization
  • Most importantly, the creation of new sustainable jobs for our region

Considerable interest has been expressed by regional mining, wood products, aerospace, medical, composite and biomedical industries, as well as entrepreneurs, in developing this type of relationship with UMD.

Workforce & Business Development

SCSE and NRRI strongly believe the development of such partnerships is the key to workforce development and the success of the current and next wave of business development.

Further development of state-of-the-art research and testing facilities at SCSE and NRRI will be able to apply nano-, micro- and macro-scale technology to preform research and testing.

This entrepreneurial environment will be accomplished through:

  • Collaboration with existing university and industry expertise
  • Additional academic programming
  • Internship and research experiences for students
