Science on Deck - Sept 29

Tour the Blue Heron and learn about "the other largest lake in the world."

The scientists and staff of UMD's Large Lakes Observatory (LLO) invite the public to board and tour the Blue Heron research vessel’s during LLO Science on Deck Friday, September 29, 2017 in the Twin Ports Harbor near the Great Lakes Aquarium, 353 Harbor Drive. This "Science on Deck" event is free and takes place from noon-4:00 pm with a 3:15-3:45 pm presentation by Ted Osersky

Dr. Ted Osersky’s presentation is titled; "Lake Baikal: the other largest lake in the world."

Osersky is an assistant professor of Biology from the Large Lakes Observatory. He earned a Ph.D. in Biology in 2010 from the University of Waterloo. His focus of studies are on the impacts of environmental change on elemental cycling, food webs and biological communities in large lake ecosystems.

Located on the Duluth campus of the University of Minnesota, LLO is the only institute in the country dedicated to the study of large lakes throughout the world. They focus on the global implications of investigations in the areas of aquatic chemistry, circulation dynamics, geochemistry, acoustic remote sensing, plankton dynamics, sedimentology and paleoclimatology.

LLO operates the largest university-owned research vessel (R/V) in the Great Lakes, the R/V Blue Heron. The Blue Heron is part of the University National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS), and is chartered by research scientists on any of the Great Lakes.
