Inclusive Game Development

Three Minnesota leaders in computer game development share their ideas about ways to make the field more welcoming to users.

There is a new wave in computer game development that takes the field past Barbie and Mortal Kombat...  Why? Because, according to panelist Ed Downs, "Diversity and inclusivity in games matters to the people who play them."

This presentation brings together several perspectives on computer game development. It includes Ed Downs, in the Department of Communication, University of Minnesota Duluth and Nic VanMeerten, cofounder of GLITCH. Nic is a Ph.D student studying how people learn in complex multiplayer video game environments.

The panel features Charles McGregor, founder of Tribe Games, a computer game development company. Charles is also a performance musician and he composes music that is integrated into computer games.

Inclusive game development is a new trend in game design that more directly involves players and community members represented in a game in the design and creation of that game. Inclusive game development ensures that the game meets the needs of the players, addresses issues important to the community, and respects the players as creators rather than simply consumers.

This event is free and is open to the public.

The event is organized by the IAS Collaborative on Inclusive Game Development. The Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) is a University of Minnesota unit that promotes synergistic interdisciplinary activity transcending departmental structures.
