Supporting Undergraduate Research

Creating Unique Experiences

A focus on undergraduate research provides students with one-on-one experiences with faculty who are active in research and creative activity. Our outstanding faculty and their dedication to these opportunities have set the stage for the University of Minnesota Duluth’s position as a national leader in undergraduate research.

A gift to the UMD Science and Engineering Student Research Fund will support undergraduate student research in the Swenson College of Science and Engineering.

Alex Tappe standing in front of culvert

Alex Tappe, a senior in UMD’s civil engineering program and a McNair Scholar, is working on a real-world problem. “There is a slushy machine effect when a river goes through a culvert in the winter,” he says. The water then creates so much ice, the spring flows cannot pass the culvert, which overtops the road and damages the road and property upstream.
